San Diego County Water Authority Manufacturing Newsletter October 10, 2018 San Diego’s Booming Manufacturing Sector is Brought to You by Water! While San Diego is perhaps most famous for its beaches and laid-back lifestyle, it’s also home to more than 100,000 manufacturing jobs across more than 300 industries. In fact, San Diego County’s manufacturing sector supports the region’s economic prosperity by delivering products that put San Diego on the map. And just about every one of the region’s 4,000 manufacturing facilities relies on safe and reliable water supplies from the San Diego County Water Authority and its 24 member agencies. That fundamental resource is critical in a region that only receives only about 10 inches of rain a year – not even close to the amount of water it takes to sustain a $220 billion economy. Through its Brought to You by Water program, the Water Authority is partnering with local industry leaders to showcase how safe and reliable water supplies fuel key industries that, in turn, power one of the nation’s top 20 economies and support more than 1.5 million jobs. From everyday items to technological breakthroughs, investments in water supply reliability have allowed San Diegans to create some of the nation’s leading products. Qualcomm, for example, has been a telecommunications leader for 30 years, delivering advances such as 5G wireless technology and artificial intelligence. In San Marcos, Hunter Industries is helping to revolutionize the irrigation industry with products that are distributed worldwide. But that’s not all. San Diego-based Kyocera makes high-tech products such as ceramic semiconductor packages and microelectronic devices. And in El Cajon, Taylor Guitars brings the music of world-famous entertainers to life and millions of fans to their feet. From Carlsbad to Otay Mesa, numerous other manufacturing companies comprise the region’s $23 billion manufacturing sector. And they all have one thing in common: They are all Brought to You by Water.
