MiraCosta College Hosts 65th Latino Book and Family Festival MiraCosta College is hosting the 65th Latino Book and Family Festival at its Oceanside Campus on Saturday, September 15, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free. The festival is part of Latino Literacy Now, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1997 by Edward James Olmos and Kirk Whisler to empower underrepresented communities and promote educational, financial, and health literacy. The festival features the Recognizing Greatness Awards for outstanding community leaders and teachers. The El Espíritu de la Comunidad Awards recognizes grassroots community leaders. The Maestro Awards are for exemplary educators. Organizers hope to give the El Espíritu de la Comunidad Awards to a group of people or individuals pushing for increased opportunities, equal rights, better security and protection or for improved education. Giving these community leaders recognition — each with their own unique backgrounds and stories —encourages them to continue their efforts to help their community succeed. The Maestro Awards recognize teachers who go above and beyond the classroom to further their community. These educators are not only great teachers, they serve as mentors, and activists committed to multicultural education. Nominees can also be lifelong learners, leaders or innovators. The festival is now taking nominations for both El Espíritu de la Comunidad and Maestro Awards. Nominations can be completed online at www.lbff.us/awards or postmarked by 5 p.m., August 10, 2018. The Latino Book and Family Festival is still looking to increase our volunteer staffers to help make this year’s event a success. If you are interested in volunteering, sign up at www.lbff.us. About MiraCosta College The MiraCosta Community College District has served the coastal North San Diego County area for over 80 years. More than 17,000 credit students per semester in over 70 disciplines enroll in associate degrees, university transfer and workforce readiness certificate programs. The college also serves a wide spectrum of educational needs in the region ranging from programs for adult education, basic skills, and ESL to a California Community College pilot program offering the nation’s first baccalaureate degree in biomanufacturing. MiraCosta College is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.
