Event Description:
Take a magical visual history tour of The Beatles illustrious career in the exhibition The Beatles: I Saw the Photograph. Featuring a collection of vintage and modern photographs by iconic photographers such as Annie Leibowitz and Linda McCartney, the exhibit presents a sampling of works from the VPV Photographs Collection. Spanning the years 1958-1980, the collection tells the story of The Beatles from John Lennon’s first group The Quarrymen, to the fateful day at the Dakota apartments in New York in 1980. Highlights from the exhibit include an image by Dezo Hoffman of The Beatles at EMI studio recording “Love Me Do” and Annie Leibovitz’s iconic image of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Intended to coincide with “Come Together at OMA: Art After Dark Beatles Tribute” on June 17, this exhibit provides visitors a deeper look at the life of the Fab Four: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. We hope to spark a renewed interest in this legendary English rock band. The exhibition will be on view in the OMA Parker Gallery from June 11-18, 2011. Local San Diego Beatles collector Vincent Vigil began acquiring photographs featuring images of the Beatles in 1988 with the purchase of two Linda McCartney prints. Spanning the years 1959-1980, The Collection consists of both vintage and modern prints, snapshots, lithographs, postcards and posters. Some of the photographers in the collection are Astrid Kircherr, Albert Marrion, Robert Whitaker, Don McCullin and Mike McCartney. Some of Vigil’s rare images have been added to the permanent collection of The Beatles Story museum in Liverpool, England. More information about the collection can be found at vpvphotographs.com.
Directions:
Oceanside Museum of Art The museum is located at 704 Pier View Way in downtown Oceanside, California within walking distance from the Oceanside transit center with Amtrak, Coaster, Sprinter and Metrolink stops.
