Event Description:
On Saturday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m. guest curator Mel Yoakum, Ph.D. will give a visual presentation discussing the symbolism and meaning behind the collection of works he selected for the exhibition. For over two decades, Dr. Yoakum, director of the F. Gilot archives, worked personally with Mme. Gilot cataloguing her extensive oeuvre of oil paintings, monotypes, watercolors, gouaches and original prints. Dr. Yoakum is also the author of Stone Echoes: Original Prints by Francoise Gilot – A Catalogue Raisonne, and Francoise Gilot Monograph 1940 – 2000, as well as numerous exhibition catalogue essays and articles about Gilot’s oils, monotypes and works on paper. This event is complimentary with museum admission and free for OMA members. Interested in mythology, symbolism, and the power of memory, French/American artist Françoise Gilot expresses complex philosophical ideas with lyrical accessibility. Transitions: Works by Françoise Gilot features a collection of oil paintings and works on paper that highlight her interest in color relationships and the fine line between figuration and abstraction. Gilot uses abstract organic shapes to reflect her interest in the formal arrangements of lines and planes, tone-color coordination, and her respect for simplicity. Also known for her earlier relationship with 20th century icon Pablo Picasso, Gilot resided for many years in La Jolla with her husband, polio vaccine pioneer Dr. Jonas Salk. Gilot currently divides her time between studios in New York and Paris. This exhibition is curated by Mel Yoakum, Ph.D., who began his close professional association with Francoise Gilot in 1987.
