Event Description: Make Spring bloom at Oceanside Museum of Art at the next Free Family Art Day. Create beautiful flower sculptures out of a variety of fun materials. Inspired by two of the current exhibitions in the museum, Botanicals: The Photography of Imogen Cunningham, and Islands of Color: Polynesian Quilts, children and their families are encouraged to learn about the floral imagery on view and design unique floral sculptures that reflect their individuality. There will be three activities to engage children of all ages. No art experience is required for the art activities. Healthy refreshments are provided. Botanicals: The Photography of Imogen Cunningham features over 40 black and white botanical photographs from the 1920s-1930s. A pioneer of 20th century photography, Cunningham used botanical specimens such as flowers, leaves, and cacti, from her garden and elsewhere as her prime subject matter for this series. Botanicals will be on view through May 22, 2011. Elaborate and vibrant quilts have been produced in Polynesia since the introduction of woven cloth to the Pacific in the early nineteenth century. Used for more than just decoration, quilts are part of their cultural fabric and play a major role in ceremonial traditions in Polynesia. Islands of Color: Polynesian Quilts presents eight vibrant large-scale quilts featuring traditional Polynesian floral imagery that translate cultural themes and values into symbolic visual interpretations of the world around them. Islands of Color will be on view through May 1, 2011. At Free Family Art Day children and their parents work closely in the artistic process designing small works of art that reflect concepts and themes from the exhibitions on view. All art activities and exhibitions on view are free to the public. On display in the museum is Botanicals: The Photography of Imogen Cunningham, Islands of Color: Polynesian Quilts, Combs: Asia, Africa and Oceania, and Affirmations of Spirit: Carolyn Guild.
