Event Description: “Keeping the Music Alive…in Our Schools and in Our Community” is the slogan of this year’s annual Oceanside Music Festival, locally known as OMFest, and each concert is scheduled to feature a youth component and youth performances by North County’s students. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: For the 9th year, OMFest, an arts event of Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation, members of “Americans for the Arts", has scheduled a wide variety of music performances to showcase both student and professional musicians in our area. From Oct 12 opening with the Scholarship Gala at Oceanside Museum of Art, through the Big Band concert at Mission San Luis Rey on Oct 24, OMFest 2010 will once again present a wide range of concerts. OMFest has evolved over the years from its beginnings in 2002 by Tomas J. Morrow, PhD and the Oceanside Rotary Club with an all-Gershwin program. Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation / OCAF took over OMFest in 2005 and expanded it to include a variety of musical genres. The goal, however, has remained the same: the organization hopes to inspire young musicians to further explore their talents in the musical arts, while raising funds to support their talents and dreams. We all know about the dismal budgetary problems facing our local schools. Unfortunately, the arts are some of the first curricula to be minimized or axed. Something must be done to assure that our children are educated in the musical arts and can benefit from the skills and pleasures they provide. Fortunately, Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation’s John Steiger Performing Arts Scholarships are presented annually by OMFest to graduating North County high school seniors based upon student experience, contributions to their performing arts program, and teacher recommendations. Now graduates, there were four recipients of John Steiger Memorial Performing Arts scholarship award from OCAF earlier in 2010, thanks to the attendance by general public and the contributions from sponsors that had helped organize OMFest the year before and thus facilitated the festival’s fundraising goals (see photo at http://www.ocaf.info/OMF/index.html ).
