Event Description: Please note that the Grunion Run transitions to a Closed Season from April -May. You can still see the Grunion along the shore, but it is designated as Observation Only and you are not allowed to catch any of the fish. The Grunion Run is back! Every Spring and Summer, the beaches of Oceanside play host to thousands of slippery fish who land on its shores after nightfall. These fish are famous for their remarkable spawning behavior, which evokes an “I don’t believe it!” response from people seeing or hearing about it for the first time. Grunions leave the water at night to spawn on beaches making for an awe-inspiring sight. For four consecutive nights, beginning on the nights of the full and new moons, spawning occurs after high tides and continues for several hours. As waves break on the beach, grunion swim as far up the slope as possible. Bring your flashlights to the beach to spot the Grunion. April 2016 Grunion Run Dates: April 7: 10:10pm – 12:10am April 8: 10:50pm – 12:50am April 9: 11:30pm – 1:30am April 22: 10:05pm – 12:05am April 23: 10:30pm – 12:30am April 24: 10:55pm – 12:55am April 25: 11:25pm – 1:25am Grunion Run Helpful Hints: * The times given reflect the probable two-hour interval during which the spawning may occur. ** The second hour is usually better. The better runs normally occur on the second and third nights of a four-night period. *** Since this is a naturally occurring event, there is no guarantee that grunion will be seen.
