Event Description: GLOBAL SPIRIT, the second concert in this year’s OMFest / 8th annual Oceanside Music Festival combines liturgical and world folk music. The free concert will be an exciting blend of cultures, beliefs, and languages, united by their love of music, wrapped in an explosion of colorful costuming.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saint John of Damascus Orthodox Church Choir of Poway is made up entirely of amateur singers. The singers come from very different backgrounds and have varying levels of musical training and experience. They have come together with the primary purpose of leading their congregation in worship and prayer through song. In the Orthodox Church, there is no instrumental music and all the singing is a cappella. The music in Orthodox worship is an essential element in the liturgical life of the Church. Carole Shumaik, the director, converted to Orthodoxy in 1972. She has been leading the choir at Saint John Church for almost 30 years and is blessed to work with such a dedicated group of singers for the glory of God. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- North Coast Youth Singers Chorus was founded in 1993 by Sally Husch Dean, as a community outreach program of the San Dieguito Methodist Church, Encinitas. The chorus was an official program of the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Dieguito from 1994 to 2003. In 2003 it became a part of The San Dieguito Performing Arts Association, a non-profit arts organization. NCS have performed throughout the world including: Performed in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City with Alice Parker and Melodious Accord, performed Orloff’s "Carmina Burana" with the San Diego Symphony, with Jung-Ho Pak. Members of the choir toured Italy with performances in Venice, Florence and Rome, including a Mass at St. Peters Basilica in the Vatican, premiered the commissioned work of Jeff Nevin “Sacred Words” featuring all four ensembles, 125 singers in grades 2-12. The advanced treble choir Caprice worked with celebrated New York composer, Cary Ratcliff, in preparation for a performance of his music.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Zhena Folk Chorus is a San Pedro-based all-female a cappella singing group that specializes in the village folk music of Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. The word “zhena” means “woman” or “wife” in Slavic languages. Its mission is to perpetuate these rich musical traditions of choral music, to heighten awareness of a beautiful and vigorous heritage and to signify the primary role of women in preserving this important genre of world music. Eve Pericich is the artistic director. The chorus is known for its ability to connect with the audience through unique programming, stunning authentic costumes and a story-like narrative that engages adults and children. Zhena Folk Chorus has been featured at the Getty Center, Disney Hall Keck Amphitheater, the World Festival of Sacred Music and numerous universities, museums, libraries and festivals throughout greater Los Angeles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The concert will be held Sunday, October 11, 2:00 p.m. in the historic St Mary Star of the Sea Church, 619 Pier View Way, downtown Oceanside. A Free Will Offering will be taken up. For more information about Global Spirit or any of the upcoming concerts call the OCAF message center 760-433-3632 or check the web site (see link).
