Event Description:
Designed and fabricated by David Fobes and Jazmin Manriquez, and presented by Oceanside Museum of Art and Westfield Plaza Camino Real, this installation is an intuitive response to merchandising materials available from shopping center vendors on site at Westfield. Although this installation evokes multiple meanings about advertising, product waste, freedom of choice and our context as consumers, it is ultimately a demonstration of how art can be created with a sustainable intention through re-purposing and recycling. The installation is situated in an available storefront window located on the first floor of the shopping center near JC Penney and the carousel. Once the installation closes, all of the material, except for the large collage, will be returned unaltered to the shopping center, and will re-engage with everyday service instead of going to the landfill. David Fobes is a mixed media design artist who has been making and exhibiting art locally and nationally since 1981. He has also been a lecturer at the School of Art and Design at San Diego State University (SDSU) for twenty years. Jazmin Manriquez is a painter and sculptor who lives and works in both Tijuana and San Diego. Her work is informed by her bi-cultural and bi-national experiences. She is currently a senior with an emphasis on Studio Arts at the School of Art and Design at SDSU.
