MiraCosta College Presents: Kronos Quartet World renowned musicians, Kronos Quartet, will be preforming at MiraCosta College Oceanside Campus Concert Hall on Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. The Quartet, David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola), and Sunny Yang (cello) are based out of San Francisco. “MiraCosta College is proud to present in concert, one of the most celebrated and influential groups of our time, the Kronos Quartet,” said music faculty Christy Coobatis. “We are hopeful that their extraordinary breadth and creativity will serve as examples of the high artistry able to be achieved through dedication, passion and application of pedagogical study.” Kronos Quartet will be preforming My Lai Lullaby in remembrance of the massacre 50 years ago of more than 500 Vietnamese civilians by American troops in the village of My Lai on March 16, 1968. Chief Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson, flying helicopter reconnaissance on a beautiful morning, happened upon the slaughter and landed his craft three times, trying to disrupt the proceedings and disperse the troops. He reported the massacre to little effect and was long vilified as a turncoat, only to be rewarded three decades later with the Soldier’s Medal for heroism. For more than 40 years, Kronos Quartet has combined a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually reimagine the string quartet experience. Kronos has performed thousands of concerts worldwide, commissioned more than 900 works for string quartet, received a Grammy in addition to more than 40 other awards, collaborated with many of the world's most accomplished composers and performers, and released over 60 recordings. Tickets for MiraCosta students and staff are $20 and general admission is $25. On Sunday, March 11 at 9 a.m. there is a free and open to the public critique and coaching session of four local string quartets preforming pieces from “Fifty for the Future.” In 2015, Kronos launched Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire, an education and legacy project that is commissioning—and distributing for free—the first learning library of contemporary repertoire for string quartet.
