MiraCosta College Community Education Excursions The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens–A Unique Way to Enhance Your Zoo Adventure Saturday, March 10, 2018 Experience one of the most unique zoos in the U.S. This is a very scenic and informative place where you do not feel like you are in a zoo. The Living Desert was established in 1970 by several trustees of the Palm Springs Desert Museum who foresaw the impact that resort development would have on their local desert ecosystem. This vision led to the establishment of an interpretive nature trail and preserve in Palm Springs. The gardens showcase the diversity of forms adopted by plants found growing in the harsh conditions typical of the world's deserts. Over 1,400 different species of plants are represented in the many gardens that constitute The Living Desert's plant collection. Embark on a two-hour safari tram tour of the grounds led by a nature guide. You'll see remarkable plants, animals and natural phenomena associated with deserts and discover how The Living Desert is helping to interpret and protect them. Stops will be made at the major animal exhibits. In addition, you have an exclusive showing of the District Commissioner's House, which has a panoramic view of the Amour Leopard. There is a stop at the Wildlife Hospital where you will be able to see the state-of-the-art equipment the veterinarians use to keep the zoo's animals healthy. After the tour, enjoy a no-host lunch in one of the cafes and giraffe feeding ($6 added fee). The Living Desert offers an experience like no other. Fee: Book Early for $88. For booking made after 2/16, fee will increase to $98. Pick up and drop off at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside in Parking Lot 1A. Depart: 8 AM. Return: approximately 5:30 PM.
