Bus Route from Valley to MCC Background: "For decades North Oceanside Valley residents have had to travel between 80-120 minutes to get to MiraCosta College and/or the Tri-City area. However, starting on October 8th, NCTD route 315, will now provide the opportunity for Valley residents to travel to MiraCosta College and/or the Tri-City area within 40-50 minutes." Approximately 6-miles separates Mira Costa College and the North Valley area of Oceanside. A significant amount of the families that live in the North Valley community are considered low-income and highly depend on public transportation. Because of their financial needs, many of these students must fit classes around their work schedule. However, under the current NCTD bus configuration, excessive time-consuming bus routes bind students to limited access to school and work. A significant amount of these students are first-generation college students. It could take students upwards of 80-120 minutes to travel to and from Mira Costa College. Nevertheless, students continue to make the daily trip, which establishes the need and market for a more efficient route. The travel time between this low-income community and MiraCosta’s Oceanside campus is a hindrance and an issue of accessibility towards higher education for our residents. For the past couple decades, community resources have been invested towards improving the overall quality of life for the residents in the North Valley area who have been subjected to gang violence and crime. Making higher education more accessible to the residents of North Valley should help promote an increase of college enrollment and retention among this community, which will improve the overall quality of life for its residents. Research demonstrates that participation in higher education leads to higher wages, job growth, and less crime. Thus, establishing this route should help improve the overall economy for the City of Oceanside, as well as the County.
