Diversified business executive and former school board trustee Mark S. Tanner has been appointed Executive Vice President for Operations and Administration for the Army and Navy Academy. Tanner’s 36-year resume includes serving as Chief Financial Officer for Pepsi International, United Technologies’ automotive subsidiary, Mrs. Fields/TCBY, and the 2002 Olympics Organizing Committee. He also has held senior management positions for Pepsi-Cola, Pizza Hut, and Otis Elevator. Most recently, he was Chief Operating Officer for AVID, a nationwide non-profit organization that conducts college readiness programs to help close the achievement gap among all students. The new Army and Navy Academy executive also served eight years on the Board of Trustees of the Carlsbad Unified School District; two years as the board’s president. He is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese and conversational in French, Italian, and Mandarin. Tanner graduated with an economics degree from Stanford University, later earning an MBA in finance and accounting from UCLA’s Graduate School of Management. At the 106-year-old academy, Tanner oversees the academy’s development, human resources, marketing, administrative, and IT operations. “Mark brings to the academy a broad and impressive set of skills and senior-level experience in both the corporate and educational worlds,” said Maj. Gen. Art Bartell, the academy’s president. “We’re excited that he’s a part of our Warrior team.” Tanner and his wife, Ann, have five adult children and reside in Carlsbad. Founded in 1910, the Army and Navy Academy is a private not-for-profit institution that provides an academically robust, character-based education for young men, grades 7 through 12. It is the only private boarding school in San Diego County and the only military academy for high school-age students in California and surrounding states. The academy’s mission is “to educate, mentor and develop leadership and good character in young men.”
