After OCAF was formed in 1989, OCAF first came up with an idea of Oceanside Museum of Art, then OCAF helped create the city’s Arts Commission, which nurtured the idea for what began as “Day of Art” and eventually turned into Oceanside Days of Art. Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation is a non-profit organization whose goal is to broaden the cultural, artistic, musical and performing arts in Oceanside and the surrounding communities. All proceeds from this event will be used to provide scholarships to graduating high school seniors pursing visual and performing arts degrees not just from Oceanside, but throughout North County San Diego, and to put out more events of arts-and-culture nature for you to enjoy. BACKGROUND STORY: “Write On, Oceanside!,” an annual event by Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation and Oceanside Public Library, was initially opened only to Oceanside authors, and was later expanded to North County authors over the last couple of years. This year, it seeks participation from writers from the entire San Diego County. “Summer Shorts” festival of short plays had previously been held in Oceanside for six consecutive years. New Vision Theatre Company had produced Summer Shorts – a collection of about 8 ten minute theatrical plays that were first chosen from around 200 entries and staged at Sunshine Brooks Theatre downtown Oceanside. The audience then voted for their favorites, ranking the plays 1 through 8 determining the winner. The very last Summer Shorts 2011 were well received by the audiences, which resulted in that year’s voting being by far the closest it had ever been - with nearly 400 usable ballots in a spread of just 300 points between the first and third places, including a “dead heat” in the battle for the first place. For the first time in history of Summer Shorts there was a tie: two plays "Code 7” and “Credit Check” turned out to be the winners of the staged competition in 2011. "Code 7” was written by Michael Callahan, directed by Thom Mulligan, cast: John Kalb as Dr. Peterson, Abby Fields as Sissy, Jared Spears as Butch, Zamora Cavanaugh as Wanda. "Credit Check” was written by Eddie Zipperer, directed by Lukas Vetrak, cast: Dmitriy Demidov as David Bartley, Zamora Cavanaugh as Jessica Bartley, Savannah Fairchild-Lowe as Angela, Barry Horton as God and as Dark Angel. In the second-place that year was “Entering a Mindfield” play by John A. Donnelly and in the third-place “The Gospel According to Bowser” by Dan Borengasser. Now, Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation has decided to bring the popular event back to Oceanside by partnering with Oceanside Public Library and two other non-profits MainStreet Oceanside and Oceanside Theatre Company. Many actors, writers, and theatre-goers in the community are excited that “Summer Shorts” is back on track.
